About:

Helvetica is anything but dead. Like any piece of living and breathing popular culture, it is always undergoing changes based on current styles and tastes.

Weights and alternate Lettershapes

What changed?

Everything. The entire Typeface has been redrawn based on countless different Versions of Helvetica, Akzidenz Grotesk and even Univers, to incorporate everything that I find beautiful, functional. And at the same time ditching everything I don't like. The rounded Dots are based on photographs and brochures of Target Helvetica. The letters and numbers are redrawn, made softer, rounder, friendlier - and on occasion - even more square. The lowercase a in Helvetica is missing the stem in the Bold weight. This always bothered me greatly. I redrew the shape pf the lowercase bold a to match that of the regular style. Interestingly, it was not until later that I realized Target Helvetica did the same thing. Finally, I spaced and kerned the entire typeface based on my own experiences and conventions, simplifying and unifying the process.

Some basic differences.

Change Log:

This section is an effort to both always keep the most up-to-date version of the typeface online, but also preserve the different states of the typeface as it is developing.

14. December 2016

Lowercase a:

Completely redrew the shape (again!), based on pictures taken of various German-sourced non-digital Helveticas found on old Sparkasse, Bundesbahn & Rhein-Ship Signage.

All weights of lowercase a have been drawn by hand, nothing is interpolated.

Added Oblique to Desktop Font, work in progress.

Brand new Alternates:

Brand new Alternates for Lowercase g and ß, borrowed in from Kambri. Also rearranged style sets.

14. December 2016

Lowercase a:

Bold Weight: lengthened glyph to be more similar to the shape of Helvetica BQ or AG Book. Still balanced it against its longer tail. Counter is slightly bigger to address the smooth transition into the stem. But I did raise the point where the two melt together, to again give more of a BQ feel.

13. December 2016

Lowercase a:

  1. Hairline Weight completely re-drawn.
  2. Regular Weight: adjusted shape of lower counter bar
  3. Bold Weight: straightened out stem-attachment (in departure from BQ-inspired version), made bottom curve thinner.
  4. Black Version: Moved counter up, rounded general shape

Lowercase t:

  1. slightly taller overall height across all weights

Lowercase e:

  1. several improvements to shape across all weights
